24 May SENSEable Tots
There's no need to prebook! Arrive early or stay after class to enjoy some time in the playcentre and the Nest Cafe. This session is included with an admission ticket or monthly pass.
- Children learn by using their senses. Not only do they learn about the world about them, but by examining and manipulating sensory materials, they strengthen their fine motor skills, hand-to-eye coordination, hand dexterity and are introduced to maths concepts and language in a fun playful way.
- Children also learn behavioural norms from being in this social group and they are motivated to try new things and learn skills by seeing other children in the class.
- You can start sensory activities with your child from the moment they are born. Sing and talk to them. Shoe them black shapes and let them touch different textures.
- Sensory play has a calming effect on children and classes help them learn about social expectations of behaviour in a small nurturing setting.
- Children use their fine motor skills to manipulate the sensory materials which helps strengthen the pincer grip used for writing. They also indirectly learn about mathematical concepts such as volume and density as well as language concepts that are used to describe sensory materials etc.
- Sensory classes differ from conventional parent and toddler groups as the parents engage more with their children. The child proudly shows what he/she has mastered and looks for the parent's approval. Doing action songs also requires the parent's participation.
What can parents do at home to encourage sensory/ educational play?
- Follow your child's lead to see what they are interested in and try to incorporate that into a fun play activity. For instance, if your child loves diggers then put some diggers into a tub of rice.
- Let your child help to cook and bake. Let them smell all the herbs.
- Bring your child on a nature walk and let them help with the gardening.
